You remember in 4th grade when you learned about how the sun is a giant ball of burning gas? Well that wasn't the whole truth. The sun is actually a giant ball of nuclear fusion. This means that sunlight, or Ultra Violet Radiation, is literally radioactive, nuclear fallout. Meaning that you are constantly exposed nuclear radiation that's literally trying to melt the skin off your body!
The myth that sunscreen causes cancer is just that. And even if it were true... You could potentially get cancer from sunscreen but you absolutely will get cancer from UV Radiation damage. Bacon is a type 1 carcinogen but most people eat it on purpose anyway. Why should wearing sunscreen be any different? UV radiation damage is the leading cause of skin cancer in ALL skin tones. Sunscreen is the most effective treatment to prevent sun damage & cancerous lesions and signs of aging.
And on top of that, all of your other skincare products are, quite literally, worthless if you're not wearing sunscreen because UV rays actively work against the ingredients in your skincare, creating burns, free radical damage, inflammation and other issues.
If you so strongly disagree with sunscreen that you're not willing to use it at all, I am not the right skincare provider for you ❤️
Short answer: No.
We are born with 2 types of hair: Terminal and Vellus.
Vellus hairs are the super thin, baby-fine hairs found all over the body.
Terminal hairs are those that either are thicker & heavily pigmented (such as the hair on your head, and your eyebrows) and those that become thick & pigmented through puberty or with the use of supplemented hormones; ie: beards, leg hairs, underarms, pubic area.
It's impossible for vellus hair to turn into terminal hair without chemical (think hormonal) intervention. Since dermaplaning is a physical intervention, your vellus hair will stay vellus.
Sometimes you'll hear people claim that they should never have started shaving their legs because once they did, their hair started growing back thicker. What really happens is around the time they start worrying about shaving their legs is also around the time when puberty hits and activates their terminal hair follicles. All of their vellus hair is still there but they now have pubic terminal hair growing there as well.
That being said, since we're blunting the ends of the vellus hair by shaving them off, when they grow back in, they can feel a little thicker due to the blunt end of the hair, however once the hair grows for a bit, it'll be back to feeling soft & fine in no time.
TL:DR - I believe that estheticians and dermatologists can and should work side-by-side to care for your skin. Go to your dermatologist for routine cancer screenings or when you need a diagnosis, surgery or a prescription for a skin disease/disorder. Go to your esthetician for routine skincare.
Your esthetician should be considered your holistic skincare provider. We have been trained to care for the overall wellbeing and health of your skin. We know which ingredients help with what, what techniques can get you to your goals with the least amount of trauma, and what things you should be doing at home to care for your skin in between visits. Which is why you leave with hydrated, glowing skin after seeing your esti and not typically after seeing your derm.
Your dermatologist should be treated like a specialist or surgeon. They're there to cut out the sickness & just get the job done. Yes they have a LOT of knowledge. But dermatologists typically use blunt instruments to get the job done, such as Accutane, mega-doses of tretinoin and others that, while they are effective, they can cause other types of damage both to the skin and to your internal tissues. Dermatologists are absolutely necessary and useful when there's a problem that your estie can't handle or you need a diagnosis or surgery. And estie's routinely refer clients out to dermatologists when there's something beyond our scope of practice.
While skincare contains ingredients to help fight aging and can often reverse visible signs of aging, the goal is rarely to take years off your skin. Instead, your esthetician's job is to help you to look radiant and youthful for the age you are now! If you're seeking a drastic change in appearance, you may need to seek out the services of a plastic surgeon.
That depends on the service, your skin & your lifestyle. Some services can produce results within one treatment but most people will need multiple treatments.
Also 80% of your results will come from the consistent maintenance of your clinical treatments at home. IE; using the skincare I recommend to you instead of the garbage you can get at big box stores or beauty stores. Because I'm a trained professional, I have access to highly concentrated, clinically validated products that have been proven to achieve results.
All of that being said, I never guarantee results for anyone. But I'm always thrilled at the results that my clients do get!
There's no way for us to know how many treatments you may need, which is why we say that esthetics services provided by your esthetician should be a part of an ongoing skincare plan. Everybody's skin responds differently and while some may notice immediate improvements, some may take a while to show.
The frequency of visits depends on a few factors: are you on a maintenance track or a corrective track and how committed are you to working toward your goals?
A corrective track will require weekly or bi-weekly visits for a relatively short period of time. This is because we want a continuous stimulation of your skin in order to affect the desired change. We offer multi-session package pricing for those on a corrective track.
A maintenance track is typically entered into once you see your desired outcome or if you do not have any current skincare goals. Those on a maintenance track can simply schedule once per month for their favorite service. Although, we recommend rotating services so your skin doesn't plateau. Also, even for those on a maintenance track, it's a good idea to do a corrective series once or twice a year, just to stay ahead of mother nature!
We are fighting aging, pigmentation, acne, inflammation, etc... as it's happening, and that's an ongoing battle! Results from our services will not last forever, which is why we say our services should be a part of an ongoing treatment plan combined with a professional home-care routine.
We always appreciate a clean, bare face when possible! Coming to your appointment with a full face of cake can eat into the treatment part of your service as makeup can be difficult to remove. If you only wear tinted sunscreen, don't even worry about it, we'll get it right off!
The short answer is NO.
Using a drugstore or other brands we are not familiar with after receiving a professional treatment can lead to complications that your Licensed Professional will likely have to fix, costing you more money in the long run.
Your Licensed Professional (hi, that's us!) has access to highly concentrated, professional strength products and we've taken a deep-dive into that brand's product education to learn everything there is to know about how to use it correctly in conjunction with the treatments we offer.
And lastly, purchasing professional grade products directly from your Licensed Professional ensures they get paid for the hard work they do for you.
We are a deskless studio. All bookings, reschedules and cancellations must be done via online booking no less than 24 hours in advance. See our cancellation policy here.
If you'd like to ask questions about services or skincare, we recommend you book in for a virtual consultation, so we can make sure we set aside time just for you with no other distractions!
